Matt Helps to Make a Difference
Three years ago, Matt was looking for an opportunity to work with younger people and help make a better life for those less fortunate. After researching several outreach programs, he found Covenant House California (CHC) to be an ideal cause to become involved with and to devote his time and energy as a volunteer.
Matt chose to work closely with CHC because he liked the idea of working with kids 18 to 21. He feels at that age, hopefully he can still reach these individuals and help to make a difference. "There could be a turning point for them and I want to be a positive influence in their lives." Matt says. "I don't think there's anything more important or benevolent than giving kindness and help to those in need".
Soon he went to work as a tutor for the kids as well as becoming a Resident Advisor, assisting in the crisis area, and offering a writing workshop. Gordon, one of the participants, was already writing and said that Matt's class was an inspiration to him.
Matt is interested in becoming a mentor and participated in the CHC bowling mixer for aspiring and current mentors and clients. He's also planning on contributing to the Sunday dinners where there's a chance to interact and share with the clients of CHC.
Matt feels strongly that it's up to all of us "to contribute to make the world a better place, and I'm doing it in my own small way… there's too much negativity, violence, and self-interest and not enough assistance and service to others." With Covenant House California, Matt is helping to make a difference in the lives of the kids who are grateful for his time, compassion and service.
"I've gained a great sense of humility and gratitude working with these kids at Covenant House California. It makes me proud to be part of such a wonderful organization."
