Dave Helps Makes the Life Skills Workshops Happen
Asking Dave Bower why he volunteers at Covenant House California is a question with an obvious answer. A smile crosses his face and he beams with satisfaction. “I get an immense feeling of achievement from being able to help out,” he says. “I consider it an honor and a privilege.”
Dave has been volunteering at CHC for over 14 years. He is one of the teachers of the Life Skills curriculum. As part of the program, he gets the chance to work directly with the Covenant House California youth, teaching such things as: financial goal setting, banking, credit, and consumerism.
“I think the classes and the program are really special,” he says. “These are skills that aren’t really taught anywhere but you need to know to live an independent life.”
Dave became involved with CHC after living in Hollywood and seeing the problems of street youth first-hand. He believes in CHC’s mission saying, “There is such a need for the services that CHC provides. Some of the neediest people with the greatest problems are the youth in our society.”
Dave explains that working with the CHC youth has been a rewarding experience for him. “The kids have always been wonderful. The feeling at Covenant House California is really hard to describe—it’s almost magical to me. The kids are so great and the staff is so excellent. It’s really a fun place to volunteer.”
