Sister Margaret Helps to Keep the Faith
Sister Margaret has been working tirelessly with Covenant House California (CHC) for over five years. She provides inspiration and encouragement in the way of spiritual guidance to the clients of CHC.
She has developed several outreach programs with community churches to bring in all faiths and religious beliefs. “We also have many spiritual activities including Bible study, prayer sessions, relaxation and meditation classes, yoga, as well as knitting and crafts.”
Her office is piled high with donations for those in need and when she’s not at Covenant House working with the staff and clients, she’s busy working with ex-clients─visiting them in hospitals or wherever they may be.
One of the greatest contributions Sister Margaret makes is taking CHC kids along on her trips to Tijuana to build homes for families who are living next to dumpsites. They make a special trip to Mexico around the holidays at the end of the year taking gifts, especially for the children. For the clients who go along, “It helps to show them a different side of spirituality… not just traditional religion." she says. It also gives them a reality check. "It helps them realize they’re in much better shape than the folks they’re helping in Tijuana.” Some of the clients are so moved by the experience, they give the families some of the clothes they're wearing! “For them, too, it’s good to be able to give back.”
Sister Margaret laughs when asked how she feels at the end of the day, "Exhausted!" Through her faith, she's provided with compassion, strength and stamina to carry on as she fulfills her mission. Covenant House California is blessed to have her with them.
