Shalonda Ward and SavOn/Albertsons Give to CHC

Sav-On/Albertsons recognized Shalonda Ward as the Southern California North Area Outstanding Volunteer. Shalonda worked her way from a clerk to a managerial position and as a Sav-On store manager, she encourages her coworkers to volunteer with a variety of different charitable causes. Shalonda embodies the spirit of volunteerism: “I want to help younger people because they don’t have support at home or may have been in a bad situation. I just like helping."

As the winner of Sav-On/Albertsons Community Involvement Award, Shalonda received $1000 to donate to her favorite charitable organization. A group of six local and regional Sav-On/Albertsons guests visited the Hollywood shelter and Shalonda presented CHC Executive Director, George Lozano, with her donation.

The Sav-On store Shalonda manages began donating socks, health and beauty supplies to CHC about three years ago. Recent collaborations include contributions of bubbles, crayons, soft drinks, water, and picnic materials for youth development and community outreach projects. “We’ve even hired some of the young people from Covenant House.” Cultivated from volunteer work by two employees at CHC and an appreciation of the work we do with at-risk young people, a valued relationship continues to grow.

Ron Day, Dennis Palmer, Karen Ramos, David Rose, Bob Godlasky, and Shalonda toured the shelter and found that there were points of interest for all involved. Shalonda was impressed with the Health Clinic. “It looked like a real doctor’s office!” Ron took a particular liking to the Dispensary while Karen thrilled over the culinary internship program operated from the Kitchen. We thank Sav-On/Albertsons for supporting CHC and for promoting volunteerism in the communities in which their employees live and work.
