Planned Giving

Planned Giving is the art and science of making the most of your contributions. By thoughtful planning, your gift can provide both the greatest assistance to our kids and the most attractive benefits for you, too. The Planned Giving program at Covenant House California serves our contributors by providing information, assistance and administration for these gifts. There is no cost to the donor for Planned Giving services. Planned Giving opportunities include the following:

You may make an outright gift on your death to our kids through your Will or Bequest.

Our Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) receives high quality administration at no cost to the donor or to the trust. It also provides increased investment flexibility for the donor.

The Gift Annuity is a well-known gift plan that provides fixed and guaranteed income for life in exchange for your gift of cash or stock. The combination of simplicity, affordability, fixed lifetime payments at a high rate, some tax-free income, and a substantial tax deduction make this the most popular gift plan for our donors over aged 70.

A Pooled Income Fund is also available. A gift providing immediate income for life can be arranged for a contribution as affordable as $5,000.

For younger donors (aged 40 to 69), our Charitable Retirement Annuity provides guaranteed income to you at a very attractive rate beginning in a future year of your choice. It allows you to lock in guaranteed retirement income free from market risk, while taking a deduction this year for a large portion of the value of your contribution and giving our kids a chance for a rewarding life. That’s why we call the Charitable Retirement Annuity "the Right Thing in Retirement Planning".

Planned gifts can take as many forms as a good imagination inspired by love can dream up. Gifts of real estate, stock, life insurance and retirement plan assets are among the gifts we've recently seen. We look forward to answering your questions, helping you explore the options, and to being of service to you and your advisors.

At Covenant House California, we recommend that you consult with your attorney or tax advisor for the various tax benefits and restrictions that may apply to your specific situation. Covenant House California does not provide legal or tax advice, but our staff are always available to you and your advisors to answer questions or to help arrange a planned gift to Covenant House California. By remembering our kids in this way you keep the promise of our Covenant with future generations.

Stories about Our Donors:
Angela Casey: It Takes A Lot of Planning

Angela Casey knows the value of planning. “There’s a certain amount of planning about it. And if you don’t plan, you’re out in the cold. I’m living a fairly contented retirement now and I’m able to make plans for others, including the children at Covenant House.

When I was young, there wasn’t much opportunity for a young woman in Ireland. I knew America offered the chanced I needed, so after prayer and careful planning, I came here over my father’s objections that America was a dangerous and amoral place. When I retired in 1977, I could look back on a rewarding career in office furniture sales, opening the field for other women. On his deathbed, my father finally said to me, ‘I’m very proud of you.’ That was about the best thing I ever heard from anybody. It was all with the help of God. Without Him, I couldn’t have done anything.

Over the years, I planned for my future by investing in the stock market. One time, I made an unusual profit. I said right then, ‘Dear God, whatever I make on this good fortune, I’ll give back to you for the poor.’

I’ve been a supporter of Covenant House since it opened, because of the children. Children can’t help themselves. There’s always something an adult can do, but children are helpless. The quality of a person’s childhood forms their whole life.

For instance, a cousin of mine came from a brilliant family. But from her earliest years, she never felt she quite matched up with others. My cousin would never tell me she needed money, but I wanted to provide for her, so I purchased a life insurance policy for her benefit...Click here to read more
